Decluttering and Removing Unhealthy Energy from Your Home: A Step-by-Step Guide
Decluttering isn’t just about tidying up—it’s about creating a space that nourishes your soul and uplifts your spirit. It might be time for a transformation if you’ve been overwhelmed by clutter or stagnant energy in your home. In this blog post, I’ll guide you through my signature decluttering process to remove unhealthy energy and create a harmonious living environment.
In a world ruled by social media and picture-perfect snapshots of what a home "is supposed to look like", I believe it's important to discuss what clutter in your home actually looks like. In my Feng Shui practice and from working with hundreds of people over the last several years. I have come to define clutter as anything you do not love, anything you do not use, and anything that does not serve a purpose. Knowing these "rules" is the foundation for decluttering and removing unhealthy energy from your home.
The method I am sharing with you below is something I have taught in workshops and with clients; it tends to be a great way to remove the things from your home and life that are holding you back. But remember, the key to eliminating clutter from anywhere is to go within and ask yourself why you are allowing yourself to be surrounded by things and habits that do not make you feel good.
Decluttering and Removing Unhealthy Energy: My Process
Decluttering is a powerful practice that goes beyond organizing—it’s about consciously curating your space to support your well-being. Follow these steps to begin your journey toward a clutter-free and energetically balanced home:
Step 1: Start in Each Space with Three Piles
Begin by tackling one space at a time, whether it’s a room, closet, or corner of your home. As you go through each area, sort items into three distinct piles:
1. Things You Hate or Have Negative Associations: Identify items that evoke negative emotions, bad memories, or are simply disliked. These could be gifts that don’t resonate with you, items associated with past relationships, or things that no longer serve a positive purpose in your life.
2. Things You Love: Gather items that bring you joy and uplift your spirit. It doesn’t matter why you love them—these are the objects that spark happiness and positivity when you see or use them.
3. Everything You Feel Neutral About: This pile includes items that neither bring you joy nor cause negative feelings. These might be practical items or décor that serve a purpose but don’t necessarily evoke strong emotions.
Step 2: Remove All the Things You Hate ASAP
Once you’ve identified the items you dislike or have negative associations with, take immediate action to remove them from your living space. This step is crucial in removing unhealthy energy and creating room for positivity to flow.
Step 3: Find Homes for the Things You Love and Serve a Purpose
Next, focus on the items you love and those that serve a practical purpose in your life. Begin finding designated places for these items where they can be easily accessed and enjoyed. Whether it’s organizing them on shelves, displaying them as décor, or using them in daily life, ensure that these items contribute positively to your space.
Step 4: Repeat and Refine Your Process
Decluttering is an ongoing journey. Repeat this process in every area of your home, refining it as you go. As you continue to remove items that no longer serve you and prioritize those that bring you joy, you’ll gradually create a home filled with positive energy and clarity.
Additionally, I'd like to mention the art of decorating with things that are useful to you. For example, if you love to make tea, how can you place these items on your kitchen counter that feels nice and also puts the items you use daily on display? Creating an intentional home is about having items you love and use at hand instead of stuffed away. This saves you time and puts items you love to use in front of your face ensuring that you will use them. Have a collection of family china that never gets used? Consider displaying it on your walls or even, dare I say, USE IT. Want to start doing yoga regularly at night before bed? Try creating a space for your yoga mat to go in your bedroom where you can see it each night to remind you of this new intention you have set in your life. Allow your home to support you and it will!
Decluttering isn’t just about creating physical space—it’s about clearing out stagnant energy and making room for positivity to rush in. By following my signature decluttering method, you can transform your home into a sanctuary that supports your well-being and reflects your true self.
Commit to this journey with love and intention. Embrace the process of letting go and rediscovering the joy in your surroundings. Your home should be a reflection of your best self—a space where you can thrive and feel at peace. "We must create space for the good that we desire", as Bob Proctor would say.
