Unlock Your Potential: A Comprehensive Guide to Mastering Your Mindest and Achieving Personal Growth in Honor of My Friend, Robbie Cornelius

One of my best friends, Robbie Cornelius taught me so much about mindset starting many years ago. As I sit down to write this post, I cannot help but think of him whenever this word crosses my path. Robbie and I met through a podcast he hosted, which I started listening to about 10 years ago.

After listening for a couple of years, I said out loud to myself while listening to the episode, "damn, I could be friends with this dude." And as the Universe would have it, that's exactly what happened. Robbie has been one of my closest friends for the last 7 years. For the last 5 years, we have spent at least 3 hours a week on the phone and have talked or shared in some form or another every single day.

When he passed away in an unexpected boating accident a few weeks ago, I found myself completely devastated and wondered how I was supposed to move forward, living the rest of my earthly life without the person I shared and talked about everything with. The person who had always been my sounding board for bettering my life. The person who was always my first call when I had one of my "aha" thoughts about life, the universe, meditation, business, and all the convoluted things in-between.

I feel the best way I can honor him and our deep friendship is to not only continue to pursue the most powerful and authentic version of myself but also, to share a few of the things that he taught me that have greatly benefitted my life.

Learn how to Master Yourself with Robbie Cornelius' teachings

When I think of all the different things that Robbie and I shared and taught or inspired one another with, the list seems truly endless. But here are some of my favorite things that he introduced to me over the years that I found to be the most powerful when it comes to Mastering Your Mind.

Put on a smile as you are going to sleep. This was one he shared with me early on and I have to say, it makes a big difference. It's much more difficult to feel anxiety, or about how bad your day has been when you have a smile on your face. If you find yourself going to bed at night and you feel defeated or cannot get out of the negative side of your brain, simply try smiling. It feels pretty silly to think negative thoughts when you're smiling. It may even make you laugh at yourself-- which is the best medicine after all.

Make note of what you are grateful for throughout the day. This is a practice many of us are familiar with but one thing Robbie encouraged me to do was to keep a mental gratitude list throughout the day when I was going through a very challenging time in my life. When it felt like it would be the most difficult to find things I was grateful for, was surprisingly when I had the most things on my list. I took it a step further and created a note on my phone. I create a new note for each month and every day, I fill that note with new insights and gratitudes throughout my day. They are often super small things, like finding a penny on the ground, seeing birds, the smell of freshly cut grass or falling leaves, or maybe an insight into a problem I received out of nowhere. This is a practice that helped me not only become more connected with myself but with the Universe as a whole.

Happiness is a choice. I don't think I need to explain this one or riff on it any further. No matter how bad things are, being happy is a choice. The only thing I will say is that it's also okay to be human and allow your emotions to move through you when they appear so you can choose to be happy later, later in the day, the next morning, etc. Allowing your emotions to move through you instead of hanging onto them is the key to being happier more often than being upset or sad.

Play in the woods often. If you knew Robbie personally, he was ALWAYS on a hike. Always in the woods, or in nature enjoying himself. I would say eighty percent of the time we talked he was either leaving a hike, on his way to be outside, or walking in the woods. It was his favorite place to be and it inspired me to spend more time outside alone when I used to only go with other people.

5 Books I have personally read that have made a powerful impact on my mindset and well-being

1. Outwitting the Devil by Napolean Hill: You've heard of Hill's most popular book but few know his more powerful writing. This was one of Robbie and I's favorite books to discuss that we unknowingly both read and ended up talking about one day and we're so excited that we both knew it well. We did a YouTube video a couple of years ago discussing the book if you want to check it out.

2. Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck: Dive into this groundbreaking book that explores the power of mindset and its impact on personal growth and achievement. Discover how adopting a growth mindset can transform your life and unlock your full potential.

3. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle: Explore the transformative teachings of Eckhart Tolle and learn how to cultivate mindfulness and presence in your daily life. Discover the power of living in the present moment and embracing life with clarity, purpose, and joy.

4. You Were Born Rich by Bob Proctor: I prefer the Audible version of this book as it's a live recording from one of his seminars in the 80s. It has an old-school vibe to it but I love it.

5. The Vortex by Esther and Jerry Hicks: I listen to this often, another one I prefer to listen to over reading but I do also have a copy of a physical book for taking notes in as well. This book and Abraham's teachings have always inspired me and allowed me to think more deeply about how things work, how to detach from the outcome, and how to live within the ever-changing flow of life.
