I am excited to delve into the fascinating practice of Feng Shui and explore its incredible potential to create positive transformations in people's lives by reshaping their surroundings. Feng Shui has long been revered for its ability to harmonize energy flow and enhance well-being. Let's embark on this enlightening journey together!
I always like to say that feng shui found me when I started my business about six years ago. It was not even a thought that I would be a feng shui practitioner. Originally, I owned a home staging and design consulting business, and while I absolutely loved it, I was looking to connect with my clients on a deeper level. Through a myriad of events, the idea of feng shui kinda fell into my lap. I became obsessed with it and decided to change my entire business model, and here we are almost three years later.
I’ve taught all over the country at weekend retreats, held online and local workshops, and worked with 1:1 clients and designers just like you to help people personally connect with and enhance their spaces. This connection gives them a foundation to transform their life and live as the best version of themselves.
What is Feng Shui and How Can You Incorporate it with Interior Design?
Let’s take a couple of minutes to discuss what feng shui actually is.
In its simplest form, feng shui is the idea that your home environment is a direct mirror of you. Everything that has happened in your past, is going on in your present, and what you expect your future to hold shows up in your space. It is an extension of your energy.
Can we all agree that it’s a proven fact that everything is energy? It’s so easy for us to agree upon when we are talking about our pets, nature, and living, breathing things, but we often forget that fact when looking at inanimate objects like our coffee table, the rug under our bed, and the stools at our kitchen counter. It’s up to us to be aware of what the items in our home are saying to us.
If you hate something, that’s the energy it’s giving off. Feng shui interior design is a wellness practice for your home. The habits, routines, and practices that you do in your daily life create a home that serves and supports you. This is going to come into play for you as a designer, whether you’re fitting a space and completely reimagining it or just removing some furniture and decor and redecorating a space.
On top of creating an aesthetically pleasing room, how can that room serve the needs of your clients and also support their current life and future goals?

Practical Feng Shui Tips for Bathrooms and Kitchens
Integrating feng shui principles into your home design can create a harmonious and balanced environment. In the bathroom, consider incorporating elements like plants, natural light, and soothing colors to promote relaxation and rejuvenation. For the kitchen, focus on organization, cleanliness, and incorporating elements of nature such as wood and stone to enhance the flow of energy. By paying attention to these details, you can create spaces that not only look beautiful but also support your well-being and overall energy.
In feng shui, we use a theory called “the five elements,” which is based on principles found in Chinese medicine. Using the five elements helps us identify materials and decor in a space to create a flow of balance and harmony energetically and aesthetically.
Feng Shui Bathroom Design
1. Balance Water Element with Wood: Incorporate wooden elements in cabinets and decor to balance the heavy water element in bathrooms. Introduce plants and patterns to absorb excess water energy and create a harmonious space.
2. Color and Shape Selection: Choose calming colors such as blues and greens, associated with the wood element, to bring balance and tranquility. Use earth tones and incorporate square or rectangle shapes in design for stability and grounding energy.
3. Attention to Detail: Emphasize the importance of keeping the toilet seat closed to prevent energy (and prosperity) from going down the drain. Recommend auto-closing toilet seats when the budget allows, promoting the concept of mindful energy flow.
Feng Shui Kitchen Design
1. Reflective Surfaces and Command Position: Place mirrors or reflective tiles above the stove to maintain the cook in the command position, enhancing control and confidence. Consider placing the stove in the island or facing out towards the room, allowing the cook to interact with others and maintain a sense of command.
2. Balance the Five Elements: Balance the five elements in the kitchen: stove (fire), appliances (metal), sink (water), earth (colors/shapes), and wood (cabinets/decor). Use a mirrored backsplash behind the stove burner to symbolically double wealth, enhancing the kitchen's prosperity.
3. Strategic Kitchen Placement: If possible, design the kitchen towards the back of the house to strengthen the fire element overall. Placing the kitchen in the back, especially in the back - middle, encourages guests and family to stay longer, fostering a warm and inviting atmosphere.
